Lasem

Meandering branches with floral blooms, leaves and butterflies flow gracefully throughout this distinctive design. Varying shades of red are created by a collage of weaves interlacing red yarns with black and white.

Tiny white dots emerge sparkling from the dark ground, while blooms and surrounding flora evoke an artful and elegant mood. On the reverse, a neutral buffalo check offers a relaxed contrast to the lively jacquard pattern of the front.

Lasem takes its name from the port city in Central Java, Indonesia that produced and traded a special kind of batik fabric. Settled by Chinese merchants centuries ago, Lasem was famed for its assimilation of Indonesian and Chinese cultures. The designs they produced reflected a mixture of artistic traditions and later adapted the use of Indian florals and William Morris-style layouts.

To maintain authenticity of design, the artwork used to create our jacquard pattern was first made using traditional batik resist dyeing methods by a Javanese batik artist in Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • 100% merino wool
  • handfeel: fluffy and cozy
  • reverses to a neutral buffalo check
  • 52" x 75"
  • 3" hand knotted fringe

Our Decorative Textiles collection reflects a desire to decorate more individually. The collection celebrates multiple cultural traditions and inspirations:
